1950s kitchenGood memories build resilience. With this in mind, tell me about your mother’s kitchen when you were a child. Remember the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures. What was your experience of this kitchen? What good memories, if any, do you have of this place?

I realize a lot of people have a hard time finding good childhood memories. I counseled many. My mother and I had our issues, as well, but I have some happy memories among the difficult ones. For instance, my mother was an excellent cook, and most of the food that shows up in my novels is autobiographical. So, the smells and the tastes of my childhood—biscuits straight out of the oven, that first bite of homemade lemon meringue pie with its tart sweetness—are delicious memories for me.

Feel free to share here, write in your journal, or simply sit with the memories. Consider being grateful for any good memories you find in your mother’s kitchen. Let your gratitude build even more resilience.

Love,
Susan
