Excerpt from The Diary of a Young Girl

Do you ever get afraid? Lonely? Unhappy? I certainly do. I don’t know how we could possibly live in this world and not feel these things some of the time. Life is rough. But here are some words of wisdom from a girl who had a much rougher life than mine. Much rougher than most of us. A girl who has captured the hearts of readers–young and old–for decades. This section of her diary is often quoted, and is one that I particularly love. Here is Anne Frank “As long as this exists”:

“‘As long as this exists,’ I thought, ‘and I may live to see it, this sunshine, the cloudless skies, while this lasts, I cannot be unhappy.’ The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quite alone with the heavens, nature, and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it anne frank as long as this existsshould be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. As long as this exists, and it certainly always will, I know that then there will always be comfort for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances may be. And I firmly believe that nature brings solace in all troubles.”

Unfortunately, Anne Frank didn’t “live to see it.” So I think we need to see it for her. We are the lucky ones. Those of us who are alive right here, right now. With this in mind, I invite you to go outside with me–even in the cold, the rain, the dark, the sunny day–and take a look around for Anne. Thank her for her contribution to the world of letters. Thank her for telling her story. We are all richer because of it. Aren’t we? And while you’re at it, release your worries. Why not? Let nature be a comfort to you. Anne says it will work, and I believe her.  xo
