2009 — THE YEAR OF GRATITUDE

What if we proclaimed 2009 to be The Year of Gratitude? It is a year predicted to be rocky in terms of the U.S. economy. There is certainly plenty to worry about already. But what if instead of rushing toward worry and fear, we rushed toward gratitude?

Gratitude, according to www.dictionary.com is the quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful.

Simple, right? We’ve probably all read articles where experts have stated that an attitude of gratitude can lead to happier, healthier, and less stress-filled lives. Even Oprah got on the bandwagon for a while, suggesting gratitude journals. But why is it so hard sometimes to consciously be grateful?

If forced to name things we’re grateful for we can probably come up with the big things: our partners, spouses, kids, friends, Fido and Fluffy, and perhaps even our jobs. And of course if our health is good or even mediocre, it is something to be grateful for, compared to so many who suffer. But I don’t think gratitude has to only be about the big things. Sometimes it can be the medium things and small things that make our lives a little less hard or a little more enjoyable. Take blueberries, for instance, or a really good pen.

So what if we proclaimed 2009 to be THE YEAR OF GRATITUDE? How might your life be better if you consciously intended to stay focused on the things you are thankful for? Why don’t we try it? I’d love to hear what you think and if you’re willing to spend more time being grateful this year.

And for now, let me take up my own challenge and say that I am grateful for each and every one of you that read and support this blog. And yes, blueberries. And a really good pen.
